ACT Corrective Services (ACTCS) offers employment opportunities in Custodial Operations,  Community Corrections, and the Head Office. Operational staff work in teams to ensure the safe, secure and humane management of offenders, provide effective community supervision, and promote and encourage positive change and reengagement into the community. Key operational roles include Correctional Officers, Community Corrections Officers and Sentence Management Officers.

ACTCS periodically hosts public information sessions as part of bulk recruitment activity for Correctional Officers and Community Corrections Officers where prospective applicants can learn about careers in corrections and what it is like to work in a correctional environment. Correctional Officers

As an ACTCS Correctional Officer (CO) you are part of, and contribute to, a supportive team environment working directly with detainees. You have the opportunity to make a difference and change the lives of detainees to ensure a safe and humane community for all.

Working rostered shifts, COs work in a variety of areas in a correctional centre, including at the court, and carry out set duties.

COs are expected to:

  • have good communication skills and the ability to relate to people from a diverse range of backgrounds;
  • be a positive role model and team player;
  • have high integrity and ethical standards;
  • be critical thinkers;
  • be reliable and honest;
  • be committed to community safety and to encouraging offenders to make positive changes;
  • have a full driver’s license;
  • be medically fit for employment;
  • undergo a criminal records check; and
  • declare any conflicts of interest.

Finally, while no specific experience or qualification is needed, COs are required to complete a Certificate III in Correctional Practice as part of mandatory training.

Community Corrections Officers and Sentence Management Officers

As a Community Corrections Officer (CCO) or Sentence Management Officer (SMO) you work closely with offenders and their families to make positive changes in their lives, ensure they comply with conditions of their sentences and orders, and receive the treatment and programs they need at the right time.

You will work closely with program facilitators, service providers, and with external agencies such as ACT Policing, ACT Courts and Tribunal and the Sentence Administration Board.

CCOs and SMOs are expected to:

  • have the ability to motivate and engage others;
  • have good communication skills and the ability to relate to people from a diverse range of backgrounds;
  • have strong writing skills;
  • be collaborators;
  • be team players;
  • have high integrity and ethical standards;
  • be critical thinkers and have assessment skills;
  • be reliable and honest;
  • have a qualification in case management, social or community work, mental health, criminology or similar;
  • have good relationship management skills;
  • have a full driver’s license;
  • be medically fit for employment;
  • undergo a criminal records check; and
  • declare any conflicts of interest.
