Detainees have access to a community equivalent standard of health care through Justice Health Services. More information is available on the ACT Health website.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander detainees can also access an Indigenous-specific holistic primary health service provided by Winnunga Nimmityjah Aboriginal Health and Community Services.
All detainees receive a full health assessment on admission to the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC), including a mental health assessment.
Other health care services include but are not limited to:
- regular health checks;
- timely or urgent treatment as required; and
- specialist health services as appropriate (including dentists, forensic psychiatrists, and optometrists).
Detainees who require health care that cannot be provided within the AMC will be transferred to a health facility in accordance with the recommendation of a Justice Health Services professional.
For more information on health care at the AMC, please see the Access to Health Care Policy.
