Notice to Visitors - AMC visits arrangements 05/22

10 May 2022

All social visits to the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC) will be suspended as of Wednesday 11 May 2022 until at least Wednesday 18 May 2022. This is due to an outbreak of COVID-19 at the AMC The suspension will be reviewed regularly and you will be updated as necessary. We will endeavour to minimise the length of time that visits are suspended, and they will resume as soon as it is safe to do so. This is a necessary measure to assist in limiting the risk of further infection to detainees, visitors, and staff.

As a precaution, movements between accommodation areas have been restricted and detainees have been advised that this is due to COVID-19. ACT Corrective Services (ACTCS) and Canberra Health Services (CHS) are working closely to respond to the evolving situation within the AMC. AMC staff, together with CHS, are experienced in managing detainees with COVID-19 and all detainees who are COVID positive are isolating and following health advice.

I recognise that a suspension of visits has a significant impact on detainees and their loved ones, however this is not a decision that has been taken lightly. It is extremely important that we do everything we can to protect the health and wellbeing of detainees, those working within the AMC and the wider community. I am sorry for the inconvenience and concern that this will cause in this challenging time.

I would like to reiterate that this decision is one we have taken to protect the health and wellbeing of you, your loved ones, and our staff.

Kind regards

Ray
