Notice to Visitors - AMC visits arrangements 06/2022

26 July 2022

All in person social visits to male detainees in the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC) will be suspended as of Wednesday 27 July 2022 until at least Wednesday 3 August 2022. This is due to an outbreak of COVID-19 at the AMC in this population. The suspension will be reviewed regularly, and you will be updated as necessary. We will endeavour to minimise the length of time that visits are suspended, and they will resume as soon as it is safe to do so. This is a necessary measure to assist in limiting the risk of further infection to detainees, visitors, and staff.

As a precaution, movements between impacted accommodation areas have been restricted and detainees have been advised that this is due to COVID-19. ACT Corrective Services (ACTCS) and Justice Health Services (JHS) are working closely to respond to the evolving situation within the AMC. AMC staff, together with JHS, are experienced in managing detainees with COVID-19 and all detainees who are COVID positive have been isolated and high-risk detainees are remaining in their accommodation units and following health advice.

Female detainees and detainees in the Transitional Release Centre are not impacted at this time and operations will continue as normal.

I recognise that a suspension of in person visits has a significant impact on detainees and their loved ones, however this is not a decision that has been taken lightly. It is extremely important that we do everything we can to protect the health and wellbeing of detainees, those working within the AMC and the wider community. I am sorry for the inconvenience and concern that this will cause in this challenging time.

I would like to reiterate that this decision is one we have taken to protect the health and wellbeing of you, your loved ones, and our staff.

ACT Corrective Services are currently exploring interim options to allow for audio-visual visits. To book a ZOOM visit, please call 1300 286 583 and select option 1.

Kind regards
